Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. Her father's death as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a young girl and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She went to school there. The school she was attending after only two years in pursuit of the profession of acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. While in New York, she volunteered at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston.
